Notice to Appear
The RPD will send you a Notice to Appear by mail when your claim is ready to be heard.
The notice includes two dates:
- Hearing Date: The date of your hearing.
- Special Hearing Date: If you miss your hearing, you must attend the special hearing to explain your absence. The member will determine if your claim should be declared abandoned.
Hearing Details
Video conference: If the RPD member cannot be in the same city as you, the hearing may take place by videoconference.
Duration and Privacy: Hearings usually take half a day and are conducted in private to protect you and your family. There is typically a short break halfway through the hearing.
Children:
- Children under 12, accompanied by an adult making a refugee claim, usually do not need to appear unless required by the presiding member.
- If older children need to participate, you will be informed as early as possible.
- For concerns about your child’s participation, contact the RPD before the hearing or discuss with the member during the hearing.
