
Receiving your Decision
Notice of Decision
- When a decision is made on your refugee protection claim, the RPD will send you a written Notice of Decision and an explanation of the reasons for this decision.
- Copies are also sent to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
If Your Claim is Accepted
- IRCC or CBSA may appeal to the Refugee Appeal Division (RAD) or seek judicial review at the Federal Court within 15 days.
- If an appeal is made, you will be notified and given the opportunity to respond.
- If there is no appeal within 15 days, you will receive “protected person” status.
- As a protected person, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
Permanent Resident Status: If approved for permanent residency, follow the instructions to obtain your Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) and any additional documents.

If Your Claim is Rejected
- You may choose to leave Canada voluntarily.
- If eligible, you can appeal to the RAD within 15 days of receiving your Notice of Decision and reasons for the decision.
- If not eligible to appeal to the RAD, you can apply to the Federal Court for judicial review.
